Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
